About Me

Xin Chào,

My name is Tuyen Nguyen. I was born and raised in a small town in Vietnam. I’ve always loved math and solving problems. In secondary school and high school, I participated in various math competitions and earned several prizes. That love of problem-solving is one of the main reasons I felt comfortable choosing computer science as my major when I came to the U.S. for college. (Honestly, the other big reason was that people said you could make good money in this field, haha.)

After graduating in 2023, I started working as a Database Analyst for a U.S. cabinet manufacturing company. The company has several on-premises SQL Server instances, and I help manage and support them. Most of my time is spent tuning server and query performance, improving SQL Server health and maintenance, and building automation scripts (for example, automating live mounting and validating backups). I also research and help implement SQL Server features when needed, such as Service Broker and FILESTREAM.

I’ve enjoyed my job so far. My motto is: understand the problem first, solve it second. When I work on a performance issue, I first clarify what problem I’m actually trying to solve: What is the biggest bottleneck right now? Which queries will make the biggest difference if tuned? What information do I need to collect before taking action? Similarly, when a developer needs to set up a feature like FILESTREAM, I research the application requirements, limitations, pros and cons, and possible alternatives before implementing anything.

I try to be evidence-based in everything I do. When I report on an issue, such as long-chain blocking, I document what happened, what caused it, and how it was resolved, supported by screenshots and data.

I’ve learned a lot from Brent Ozar’s blog and many other writers in the SQL Server community, and I’m grateful for the high-quality resources they share. With this blog site, I hope to share my own journey, what I’ve learned, and practical findings from my work.

Thank you for taking the time to read my introduction!

Tuyen Nguyen
